Seminar "Sustainable fashion"
SEMINAR “SUSTAINABLE FASHION: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES”
Time: 25 September at 9.30-11.30 Location: Rotermanni, Prooviveski
Is it possible to combine sustainability with profit and good design? And is slow fashion the answer to the environmental impacts of textiles and garments, or is there another alternative to fast fashion? Center for Responsible Design (Denmark) and Estonian Academy of Arts are inviting you to the seminar ”Sustainable Fashion: Opportunities and Challenges” which is part of the Design Night 2009. Sustainable fashion is part of the large trend of sustainability where a product is produced with consideration for the environmental and social impact it may have throughout its total life. Sustainable design, environmentally friendly textiles and transparency of the supply chain have become vital issues in the fashion industry. Mads Ulrik Greenfort from the company, A QUESTION OF, which is focussing on fair trade and environmentally friendly produced t- shirts, will share their hands-on experience working with sustainability issues and tell about their production in Tanzania. The presentation will be followed by a short film, FairTrade Cotton in Cameroon, which shows the impact that FairTrade is having on cotton farmers in several villages in Cameroon. Sidse Frich Thygesen from the Center for Responsible Design at the Copenhagen Technical Academy will address the many social and environmental issues of today’s global fashion industry. How to combine the considerations of people, the planet and profit? Where in a garment’s value chain lie the greatest environmental impacts? Is slow fashion the right answer?
